I write my thoughts on this subject as a Personal Trainer. Maybe they will transfer into other industries.
Luckily for me, I am surrounded by a handful of great trainers. What makes them great??
Well in my opinion, they are all different, have their own beliefs in what works but most importantly, they know how to sell that to their clients and this is why they are successful.
So what determines success??
I can only answer this for myself and to be honest, my answer has changed over the last two years.
When i was first asked what determines success in this industry, I replied “A diary full of client appointments”.
I thought this was a good answer and so did my tutor but I have since learnt that if youre happy to work all the hours in the day then thats fine, you will be successful financially but what about YOU?!?!
What about the fact you are promoting the idea of a healthy and balanced lifestyle, yet not really living one yourself.
Hmmmm
Im sure we have all been there. Working your ass off and wishing for more hours in the day.
So I was introduced to a new way of thinking by the owner of the studio at which i work.
Its time to make that conversion from ‘trainer’ to ‘business owner’.
Think about what you want from this…
Think about the lifestyle you want to live, factor in the cost of living your current lifestyle and come up with a figure… then work backwards.
Its not that simple though.
You need to consider your method towards achieving this figure and how you plan to make it work for you.
I recently assessed where most business was coming from…REFERRALS.
So I made it my mission to develop a better referral system, offering better incentives for current clients and the most efficient way for me to gain at least 10 referrals per month.
That was my target. Sure its a big one if your business only has a small client base but once my message was clear to all, I was able to achieve this.
Consider the way in which you advertise your business and where. What works best for you and how can you develop that even more.
Once the message that my clients and I were putting out there was the same, this method really started to work for me.
An important thing i must state is, this is all FREE!!
I dont pay for any advertising!!
Now i know what to put most of my efforts into, I can spend more time balancing my work and lifestyle.
There is a certain figure I want the business to earn each year, I have factored in my expenses and I now know exactly how many hours i need to work to achieve this.
I suppose it is pretty simple after all but everyone handles business different.
I love my job but I was very close to giving up in the past as I was burning out from working crazy hours, controlled by the power of money.
Is that the lifestyle of a Personal Trainer?
It’s definitely not one I want to live!
